66 degrees w/ 14 mph winds
Day 81

Last night I figured it would be dark after four nights of bright moons….but no…this giant orange moon rose from the horizon…again I “tried” to capture it with my camera, and I’ll share what I took, but it just didn’t do it justice.

My first attempts kept putting light around the moon, but it really wasn't there.
Have no idea what button I pushed to be able to get this photo...this is what the sky and moon looked like!
Looking out to the other islands to the East and West of us and the mainland to the North is always fascinating.  We see the other lighthouses shining bright.  We also see homes and places of people we have met while we have been here.
Sometimes the little towns are sleepy and only a few lights on, but the night before last Monhegan Island was all lit up…different colors of lights.  They were also shooting fireworks…that is a sight to see those fireworks over the island and the sea.

My entryway
Wish I could send some of this weather home to Texas…it’s a little hot there!
Fresh flowers from the island

The winds are strong today and it’s a little hazy on the horizon.  For you guys back in Texas it’s not even 9 am yet and the sun is about in the noon position.  It gets bright “early” here and stays brighter longer.  But they say their winter days are short.  I can definitely see why Maine is a great place to spend your summers.

For dinner last night we finished off the leftover hamburger noodle thing….tasted better than the first night!...that’s always the way.

We have already started planning our meals so we can make our grocery list for Wed, our go ashore day…we have family: Trayce and Ted, coming to visit this great place and if we don’t plan well, then its PB & J sandwiches.

Just setting here thinking about our regular days…we don’t set the alarm to wake up anymore…its become natural to wake between 7 and 7:30, Bandits goes out, breakfast …yes Larry cooks, raising of the flag…weekends we put up two flags, we add the Seguin Lighthouse flag.  I start my blog so I can periodically come in and add a thought or tell you about something that has happened.  I usually do some kind of housework after breakfast and Larry usually heads down to the cove around 10:30.  He checks to see if we have any boats moored in the cove, piddles down there: checking the outhouse making sure it has it’s supplies, checks all the donation boxes, etc… while he waits for Ethan to arrive with our guests.  Depending on the number of people coming out depends on the boat that comes out.  Larry always tries to be down there to help them come ashore.  Brook, Ethan’s first mate, does a GREAT job, but sometimes folks just need a hand to steady their selves so they can step off the dingy.   He usually radio’s me and lets me know they are here and headed up the trail.  Bandit and I get into our places and prepare to meet and greet our visitors and our day has begun!

Rough seas below
A little after 10 this morning the fog started coming in all around us…the fog horn started, but it was a little more “manly” sounding, but after about 6 sounds it went the what we normally hear.  I’ll let the CG know that it has two tones.  They know it isn’t working at what it should be and are going to fix it…going to fix it!

A little foggy...this is looking west toward Boothbay Harbor
Saw a baby seagull, they are flying now, he was trying to walk on the wooden tram, it was funny to watch, like a tightrope walker.  Later when I stepped out I saw one of his parents about 15 foot behind him…watching!

We weren’t sure about the seas and the weather, so we really weren’t sure if Ethan would be coming today.  They did arrive, but when the visitors got up to where I am, they said they only had an hour, that Ethan was worried about the weather.  He knows the seas and the weather and it is for their safety.  So I gave my tour speech in about what felt like two minutes…..I’m sure I left out some, but I think they enjoyed what they got and that let the second set of folks go up the tower first, then switch out for the museum.  By 12:30 I was alone at the top, well me and Bandit.

Sailboats are loving these high winds
The sail boats are having fun out there…guessing this windy weather is there time to be on the sea.  Was trying to capture that great wave photo down at Cobble Stone Beach…saw my first seal come onto the rocks.  I’ve found them on the rocks, and I’ve found where they had come up and left the beach, but never watched on come on the island.
At 1:00 the temp was up to 70, but it doesn’t feel any different from earlier because of the wind. We did have one sailboat come in and park…moor their boat.

We only had one other couple come to visit us…they had been sailing and came into our cove because of the high winds and seas.

They are going in opposite directions, they came toooooo close for me! This was out the front door of our place.

An uneventful day after all the visitors.  Tried to go out and do a few things, but the wind would catch the doors and slam them shut while we were still holding them so we stayed inside and chilled.

Day 80

Wow 80 days, I feel like I’ve only been here a week.
80 days of sunrises, of sunsets!  Time flies!

Last night’s moon was as lovely as the nights before, and I finally found a “better” way to take its photo…still not the best, but it’s ok.
Last Nights Moon

The view from our bathroom is the best in the house…I understand the crow’s nest view so much better.  So I spent about an hour looking out that window and trying to catch the moon.  Enjoy!

Photo from the porch
I was a little tired this morning…chasing the moon I guess.  Blueberry Pancakes and a cup of Coffee on the porch was all I needed to start my day.

We have a pattern for our days, but they always are changed up by the fact we always have different people visiting.  They are the ones who keep this place alive; they come to see the beauty of standing high above the shores of Maine.  Then they start taking in the 360 degrees of ocean views.
That rock in my front yard

Love that dad is trying to get a photo of the kids on the ground
Ascending up to the top of the tower and going through the door to the catwalk, taking that “step” out on the catwalk, almost everyone takes a big breath as they stand to their feet.  The sounds of just the breaths, the almost gasp of people is enough to know what they are thinking.
And the kids having a blast while he takes the photo!
As they walk through the museum asking questions like, “you mean people lived here year round?” and “you lived here?”.   Seeing the photo’s from the 1800’s, the way the families lived and dressed, the buildings that stood and are gone and the building that are still standing strong and proud.  Almost all ask how we feel being able to be here….we smile and take a breath and then usually with one word, we let them know…wonderful or fabulous or breathtaking, Blessed!
Visitors taking photos of memories...this is the oil house-pre 1960/paint locker-1960 era

I hope that these two Texans can put a little part of Seguin in each visitor’s heart.  They might not ever get to come back, they might not ever give a dollar to help, but maybe when something is said about a lighthouse in Maine…Seguin comes to mind and they smile.  Knowing they have been here, they have seen and heard the history.

Flowers in my garden...I didn't plant either
The visitors have been very with their donations.  I got two memberships today, that’s a first for me….new members of our Seguin family.
Our backdoor to my kitchen

One set of visitors live just across the water in Georgetown.  They showed us their house and they also knew several of those who have been keepers.  Another couple are going to be staying in the cove tonight and came back to do the North Trail and to also see the sunset from up here.
Larry giving the tower tour

One visitor couldn’t get her phone to take any photos….we can’t have that…so I brought her in to our side and we were able to plug it in and get her just enough power to take the photos!
Sumac pod...beautiful maroon

Today I had a few moments between visitors to try to imagine my dad running around this rock…and back then it was a rock…no grass, only a few trees in the cove.  I tried to think what his duties would have been, of him coming in to check on momma and me, coming in for lunch and dinner and then the card games at night between the three couples who called this island home.  I also was wondering why he went back to Texas when he was finished….it was for Momma and me.  He took us back home to be close to family.  He really didn’t have anything back there to pull him back…so ‘Thanks Dad” for bringing us out here to Seguin and for carrying us back to Texas.  Our family is extremely close!
Not sure...just loved the different colors of all the berries in the photo...about six colors

It never got really hot today, but I did open windows in the gift shop and museum to let the breeze through…Maine air-conditioning…open the windows..it’s wonderful!
Don't know...just a beautiful tree with all these berries on it...birds don't eat them...so we don't eat them...that's what my daddy said!

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Day 79

Last night’s skies were breathtaking.  I tried to take a photo, but no matter what I did to the camera (which I really didn’t know what to do) it wouldn’t show what I was looking at….I’m going to try and “borrow” a photo from a Mainer and put it on here today. I tried to find someones photo, but nothing...sorry!

Beautiful morning, sea is smooth, wind is still and at the same time it is just enough to wrap a circle you and run like a kid playing chase, then it’s still again.  Seagulls are sleeping in I guess.  Guess we wore them out weed eating yesterday.

Another beautiful day!
By 9 we already had a three generation family come up for a visit. Two more families were close behind.  We could all see this gigantic boat/ship (this Texan does not know the difference…sorry) headed straight for our island at a fast speed, but they slowly went around us on the North side of the island….and I mean around us and came back on the South side and headed back towards Boothbay Harbor area.  They were still in high speed, guess they were just enjoying what they had and enjoying the sea!
Three generations of lighthouse lovers

Steady stream of visitors, some had been here before and they had brought their families to see Seguin.
Family enjoying their lunch my lawn rock
I love when we ask if they would like to go up in the lighthouse and the look on their faces is like a kid in a candy store.  Thought we were going to get a little rain today, but it ended up just being a few drops.
Love our four legged visitors too....I keep water available for them

A couple of gentlemen came by later and they have been sailing the coast of Maine and are on their way back to Boston now.  They wanted to stop and see us, Hank had been by here before and was wearing one of our t-shirts.  Serge had never been here so he got the grand tour.  Since the winds were so strong, they were going to spend the night on their boat in the cove, but they were going to do the North Trail first.
Hank and Serge

With the mowing finished we came and sat on the front porch just enjoying the 180 view.  We later saw a rainbow to our south.  I took a photo, but it didn’t come out as well as I had wanted.
Rainbow
  The rainbow was slowly disappearing.
The clouds were so "fluffy"

The clouds are amazing...see the rain in the back of them?
Watching the rain come our way....Larry's going to get wet
Ethan, Lindsay and Pepper came out with a great bunch of their friends to see Seguin.  It was good to see these young people relaxing, laughing and just having a good time.

Last visitors of the day

Too many clouds tonight for a good sunset photo, but it was still beautiful.  Red at night, Sailors delight!

The newspaper that I brought to add to the museum is dated August 1, 1961.....54 yrs ago today!
