58 degrees w/ 18 mph winds
Day 28

Could hear rain hitting the windows last night so we figured it was going to be a dark, wet day.  But the sun is shining and guess it was only a little rain, besides the wind, it looks to be a beautiful day.

As I opened the curtains from our bedroom, I could see a sailboat out on the rough waters.  When I came into the kitchen for coffee, I couldn’t see the sailboat.  Thinking that something had happened to it, I ran back upstairs to look again and it was ok, it had traveled a great distance around the island in that short amount of time.  In the back of my mind I was wondering…who do I call…do I use the radio…if I use the radio do I say something special or important…like Ponpon Ponpon, like the Coast Guard does (this means someones in trouble…pay attention so that you might be able to help)….or do I call 911.   Well I didn’t have to do any!  Larry said we are to get on the radio and say “Seguin Island, Seguin Island calling Coast Guard”.  Then we would give the situation that we see.  He’s so smart!

Breakfast was ham, cheese and onion omelets with English muffin for toast.
Flora on the island

Some Bible reading while the sun comes out a little warmer, then I can prepare the dirt for planting my seeds on Saturday.

Larry has already been down to the cove taking photos of our baby ducks. We’ve got more than three now!!
Ducks in the cove

Larry went to work on the guest quarters shelves today. Since I now had new shelves I did some rearranging of the sheets, blankets, games, etc... Did some cleaning and found that one of the windows has no curtains….so I’m going to sew one from a sheet and hang it up this weekend.
1 of 3..South end!  Its at least 50 foot down, wish you could see the depth

We went and worked the South Trail….this is now my FAVORITE trail!  It took us all the way to the south tip of the island.  The photo’s you will see don’t show the beauty or the heighth of the rock ledges which are about 50 foot!
2 of 3....Same site, I just move a little to the right

3 of 3...Same site...moved a little more to the right...still over 50 foot down!
Totally exhausted, done for the day!
Dinner of Baked potatoes and fresh chives and pork roast.

Historical Fact and My History mixed into one today!
The basement….the island has a well, about 200 feet deep.  We go to the “pump house”, turn on the water to the house.  It comes into our basement, into what are called “citrines”.  There are two, but we only use one, they are made out of concrete and have a piece of wood over the top.  The water is stored in there until we need it for washing dishes or bathing.  You don’t want to drink the water, it has lots of iron in it and being that it just sits in the basement, dust, etc…
When it is full, I put a beach ball in it so that we could easily see the depth, we go back down to the pump house and turn off the well.  This is how it was done in 1960-61, but we drank it.  There were also washing machines and dryers in the basement back then, but we don’t have one, our clothes would be all orange.
All the water that goes down the drain goes into a 55 gal barrel and a sump pump sends it out as gray water.  If we need water down at the cove, someone has to be in the basement to turn it on…and possibly turn it off if there is a problem with the pipes going down beside the tram.  The water heater is also in the basement.
55 gallon barrel that our gray water drains too
About half of the basement, towards the back is a large rock that the house was built on.
Just to the left of the stair si the concrete citrine

The water has nothing to do with our toilets…I’ll tell you about those tomorrow!
My first Sea Gull eggs...they were right on the trail, the parent was kind and didn't dive bomb us or Bandit

Day 27

Internet wasn’t letting me load this last night so I’m trying it again this morning.

Wow what a beautiful morning to wake up to.
Larry raising the flag
360 degrees of pure beauty can be seen.  The air is clear, the sun is shining bright, and waves are crashing in almost a hypnotic sound.

Breakfast of sausage and pancakes….we are loving these pancakes. Larry said we have to pick up some blueberries next shore day!  We would have normally been off the island today, but it wasn’t going to be good “seas”.  I don’t want to be out there if it isn’t safe…that water is cold….40 degrees.

Yard work today, so I headed to my little garden to pick some weed and get it ready for seeds.  Going to start planting my seeds the next day I can be outside.  The last keepers left “row marker labels”, so I plan on using them!
Part of our old boat ramp

When low tide came, we went down to the cove to get sand for my “porch landing” job.  It was so beautiful and peaceful.   I walked the beach looking for sea glass and any other kind of treasure that might have been brought to me from the sea.  I did find one green piece, which I should have through back so it could have been “polished” a little more.  I picked up my first piece of drift wood and brought it to the house.  Not sure what I’m going to do with it, just liked the point on it.
Fixing a few loose nails on tram

I also worked polishing on some of the wood furniture in the house.  Larry walked in after I had finished and was impressed!
Signs are up…Seguin Island Museum and our Population sign!
It's official now...our population sign is up or down(?)

Larry was working down on the South Trail and said the views were majestic.  He later went down to put signs along the North Trail…Bandit helped!
Headed out to put the North Trail sign out

Bandit had to go help!

Historical Facts
1875 Thomas Day was keeper. He retired in 1886.  He bought a farm in Bowdoinham, Maine.  In 1942 Day’s grandson Joe York was interviewed by the Lewiston Journal, he said: I hated to leave the lighthouse.  They used lard oil then in the lamps, and I can remember seeing grandfather with a big paddle stirring up the grease and preparing it for the lamp in the big lantern each night.

My History
A mission ship called Sunbeam would go by the islands and visit the people there.  They had a doctor on board that would give medical care to the islanders as well as others to meet any spiritual needs.  On this trip they had a TV/Comedian game show host named Garry Moore.  His popular shows were: I’ve Got a Secret and To Tell the Truth as well as his own show, The Garry Moore Show.
He stayed on the ship during this visit and was holding me.  He took off his Rolex watch and gave it to me to play with, while standing at the edge of the boat.  Moms watching this and anxious that I might drop it into the sea.  Later dad runs up to the house and asked for a Coke for him.  Mom who has been battling a headache that day said, “No, Garry Moore can not have my last Coke”.  Dad was a little huffed.

Our cove ducks...the male is the white one
When we do go in, it already looks like there are several of the great Wednesday Warriors that are wanting to come out and work!  Love these guys…and gals!
