Day 35

Another day in paradise!
The sun is out, but there is a little bit of haze, not foggy, just not bright.  Boats are sailing on all sides of the island.  They are traveling quickly across the water so I’m assuming the wind is in their favor.

Larry went down to the cove to sit and have his coffee this morning and take a few photos….I think he likes the ducks!!
A family had apparently come in during the night and connected to one of our moorings (a floating ball that they can attach to instead of anchoring).  A young family with three little boys ages 5, 3 and 6 months.  The two older boys were having a blast on the beach.  The family lives and sails all summer on their boat.

Ethan brought a group of three families.  One family had three little girls…they took a brochure and were very interested in possibly becoming keepers in the future.  One little girl bought a “Passport”…this passport is for getting stamps from the different lighthouses that you visit.  The Senior group from last night let me look through theirs….wow.  One lady told us about her father being stationed here at Seguin in about 1945.  She wasn’t sure.  She took the Friends of Seguin info so she could look up the information and let them know.  Larry walked with her and her daughter to the cove to make sure they got down safely.  Donations have been wonderful, people are gracious.

I love sitting outside, closing my eyes and feeling the sun, the wind and hearing all the different sounds.  I found a new little flower that I haven’t seen before.

Ethan has more tours tomorrow, so I guess the visitors will be steady throughout the rest of our time here.

I think the next time we are in town; I will try to buy me a stuffed toy bunny.  I can put it next to my photo of me, mom and her holding the baby Belgian hare.  The kids
(ok, the adults too) can then touch something and remember this place in a different way.
Didn't see the ants till I took the photo, these little flowers are so tiny
New little purple flower..it looks like an onion flower, but the leafs dont
One year as I was teaching a Sunday school group of kids, we were studying the Fruits of the Spirit.  I took a bowl of plastic fruit and wrote the different gifts, one on one piece of fruit, etc… I remember mostly the banana…I wrote “Long Suffering”, because of the length of the fruit.  After the lesson we would all have a snack of that particular fruit. Kids have come to me some 20 yrs later and talked about the bowl of fruit lesson.
Large anchor outside the tower and gift shop

Our next overnight guest will be here Friday night.  It is so neat to share this place with others.  We’ve met so many new people and some new lifelong friends…and the summer has just begun!

You know when you find out something that probably everyone else know…well I couldn’t figure how, sitting in our living room, looking out at the ocean that it was about 8” above the window seal.  How could the ocean that is “below” us be this high.  We’ll, yes you already knew this, but the horizon is “always” at eye level.  Yes I’ve done the up and down motion while looking at the horizon. Wow!

Larry was down getting me some seaweed for my garden, apparently it keeps the ground moist and gives it nutrients, anyway, two sailboats came into the cove while he was down there.  Only a father and daughter team from one of the boats came ashore.  The girl being about 26 now, first came to Seguin when she was only about 6 weeks old.  They just wanted to spend some time walking around the place and enjoy their picnic.

Chicken Pot Pie for dinner!  It’s gotten a little chilly tonight 57 degree with a wind chill of 52. Going to watch a movie on the computer and then off to bed…after watching the sun set!
The clouds are amazing

Day 34

Today was the day we go ashore.  I let Larry go it alone!  He’s a big boy and didn’t need my help.  Taking paperwork for our sales and inventory list to office, picking up mail, breakfast, laundry, hardware store and then groceries.  I still wasn’t feeling the best so I slept in and feel so much better already.  He has a different view of this…he just said I demanded he go alone…what…anyway he went alone!

WW x4 came out and worked on the bell stand, some molding around my kitchen roof, sanding on the door, sanding on the “wooden” rain gutters.
WW working on the bell platform
I never thought of wooden gutters…it makes since, and they are architecturally interesting with their curves and gutters.

It is absolutely beautiful today.  The temp is perfect, the sun shining, the breeze and the waves and the birds…wow!

Waiting for the last group of the day and totally enjoying my island...just me and Bandit
Several visitors came today and I gave my first Tower tour.  Usually Larry does this, but I had him busy in town.
I continue to learn about the islands history with each tour I give.  Sold some t shirts and received many donations!  One group said they were going to join the Friends of Seguin….Yeah and Thanks!

I worked a little outside since the last three days were “stay indoors days”.  I worked on my garden…finally…got my tomatoes, spinach, green beans, lettuce, okra, carrots, cucumbers and yellow squash.  I had already planted my peppers in the pots on the porch.  Hopefully some of it will grow and we can eat a little before we leave.  I was a little late getting them into the ground.  Tomorrow I will be going down to the cove and collecting seaweed at low tide.  I was told this will moisten the ground as well as give the earth nutrients.  I thought the salt water would have killed them….learn something new daily!

Ethan picked up my WW about 3:30, then headed back to Fort Popham to pick up a group and Larry.  Larry called and they are bringing a new mower up the hill (with Ethans help)… God is good!

The group of about 12 wonderful senior citizens…I’m a senior citizen now too…anyway this group of people where so interested in everything they saw.
Group of kids having fun, wanting to see the sunset
They took lots of pictures, enjoyed Bandit, ate dinner on our picnic table, toured our museum, tower and gift shop…donating and buying items.  They even enlightened me on some nearby islands and some history of our light.  Fresnel was the inventor…I say his name like a Texan and it is a French name and should be pronounced differently…so I’m going to work on that.
Ethan was going to be giving them a wonderful boat ride back towards Bath and as they went they were going to see more of the sunset.
The Friends of Seguin gift shop..minus a few items sold today

We had a meal of stir fried vegetables and pulled pork while watching the movie: Gods Not Dead!  It was a great show and I highly recommend it.  And that all will know what I believe….God is Not Dead!

Day 33

This is Larry coming to you tonight.  T’Ann has been a little under the weather so I am doing the writing for today.
The view towards the Oil House

The weather has been less than perfect with heavy fog and a slow drizzle all day long.  We were not expecting any visitors until we heard someone trying to come in the back door.  Alone kayaker had managed to come to see us, even in the fog.
Looking out the front porch to the east. It is only about 50 ft to the bell
He said he makes the trip several times a summer with this being the first.  As always, the first thing people ask is how does a Texan come to be the lighthouse keeper in Maine.  I told him the story of T’Ann being here in 1961 with her family and he said that he remembered the keepers from 2012 having somewhat of the same story.  So yes, Beverly your legacy lives on.

I can still here the fog horn going off; two blast every fifteen seconds now for the last two days without stopping.
Looking up to the tower

Headed to the cove in the morning to meet Ethan, so we can make our Wednesday trip to town.  The weather should break by morning with clear sailing for the boat ride on the guppy.  This will only be the second time for us to make our Wednesday trip on Wednesday.  The seas have been a little rough at times.

There are two things I have already learned since being here about being on the water:
1.    A sailor’s worst thing is his schedule.

2.  It is always better to be in the harbor wishing you were on the water than being on the water and wishing you were in the harbor.
