Day 10

54 degrees w/10 mph winds @ 7:30 am

A sad morning, but a good one!

I have yet to see a sunrise…but that will change soon!

Michael and Cyndy are busy preparing to go ashore, and making sure we have everything we need.  Going over instructions to make sure we are prepared to be alone on beautiful Seguin Island.
Cyndy, Bandit and Larry headed to cove to see them off

They are already making plans of when to come back!
We saw them off the island, said our goodbyes, sad to see them go.

Our new friends - Michael and Cyndy

When Ethan came out to get Michael and Cyndy, our guest, Janeene Stallings and her two friends came out with him.  They had originally thought of staying the night with us, but didn’t want to take the chance of getting stuck due to possible bad weather tomorrow. It was good to see them and at least they got to see the island from close up.

I rowed the dingy, which from hence forth shall be called: “Hinckley”.  Not too bad of a job if I say so myself.

Michael row your boat ashore

Found out the town was flying their flags at half-mast, so we lowered our also.

We hung a few of the lobstermen’s colored buoys along the sides of the tram.  This isn’t anything new and it does add a depth of nautical, plus if the lobstermen see their “colors”, they can always come up and get them!  The first of many little projects for the summer.

We took advantage of it being a Holiday and stayed close to the house….just in case visitors came, but sadly none showed.  Flags lowered and the Seguin flag will be put away until the next holiday.

No sunset to speak of, it was so hazy, no color just gray. But “my Light” is shining bright, which is how I will refer to the lighthouse light!  Guess that’s ok, since I call Seguin “my Island”.

Our first night…..alone, miss my new friends, they introduced us to some new wonderful food, to some card and board games.  Be safe my friends you made the beginning of our time out here so helpful!

My first time to prepare our lunch for just the two of us
Thank You!!

Sunday May 24, 2015

A little warmer this morning, 49 degree’s, wind 15 to 20 mph.

Larry’s up and coffee is ready.  Michael already has the flags flying.

We have ran out of a few items: coffee & butter, so no making cookies today.

As we sat and drank the last of our coffee, we reviewed the list of projects that are to be done.  I’ve made a copy and will be emailing it to the office.

Larry, Michael and Cyndy have headed to the cove, going to walk from cobble stone area around the east end of the island and to the cove.  I stayed to work on my post.  Had a little trouble with it last night and this morning, but finally got it to post this morning.
Sea Glass Larry found while down at the cove

I’ve found a few Biblical scriptures, that speaks of the what we are experiencing out here on the ocean.  I want to share one each Sunday, so here is the first of sixteen.

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Matthew 5:16

A beautiful day to rest, but Larry couldn’t stand it and went to weedeat the path to the lighthouse from the cove.

He then came in and started dinner, Chicken Pot Pie!  We just happened to have enough ingredients to make another dump cake.  It was suppose to be a surprise for Michael and Cyndy, but the smell soon filled the house.

The view from my desk as I write my post
The view to the east from our front door
This is a chair that has been out here for we know 55 yrs, this view is from my desk
Our grandson, Landyn called….he’s only 2, but he was missing his papaw and even got a little teary talking, both Landyn and Larry.  It was good to hear his little voice.  The family told us that we have a new calf…number 6!

Another beautiful sunset, flags taken down and folded and a card game with our new friends.  They have to leave a little after eleven in the morning.  It will be a sad moment; we have really enjoyed spending this time with them.
My favorite view, from the dining room, between the our kitchen and the tower
Another beautiful sunset

Saturday May 23, 2015

Love the clouds

The wind is strong, the temp 43 degree’s, wind chill much colder, the cold air creeps through some trim making the kitchen colder than the rest of the dwelling……but the coffee is hot! Michael prepared oatmeal with fresh strawberries.

Flags flying over Seguin
Michael hung the flag’s this morning, so this is the first time for me to see the Seguin Lighthouse flag flown with the American flag.

Repairs were made to the water line going down to the cove; the winters here are rough on the pipes. It was a simple repair of loosening the clamp and making it tighter.

Shelves for the kitchen and the gift shop.  I used a piece of cardboard to make a pattern; I will have to cut a different one for each spot since I’m making the shelf to go around brick that over 200 yrs old. They will be going into the space between the bricks that used to be where the chimney to the cook stove. It is now an empty space…but not for long, if the first shelf looks good, then more will follow.

The house smells divine; Michael is preparing a soup for lunch from our leftovers vegetable.

Cyndy, Michael, Larry and I took a complete tour of each building to document the condition of each.  Cyndy wrote while I took photos.  She will give this info to the OIC, On Island Committee, and they will be volunteering their times and talents to keep this place going.

Bandit doing very well on tram

Bandit, our little Chihuahua, went with us as we surveyed the island for what needed to be repaired.  I wasn’t sure he would go down the tram, he was a little cautious to begin with, but he’s a pro now!

Michael made dinner of pulled pork and mashed potatoes.  Cyndy sautéed brussel spouts, pecans and walnuts, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes.  I was excited to try brussel sprouts for the first time, I was very pleasantly surprised, they were good!  Leftover cherry dump cake was a finish to our meal.

Cyndy and Michael took advantage of some sun and found a spot outside to read while I worked on my little vegetable garden, turning the top soil.  It is dark and rich,  ready to grow us some extra food.  Cyndy suggested I wait for another two weeks before I begin planting.

One of my little gardens, Chives were here and waiting for us to use!

We are learning so much from our new friends about the island, hate see them leave, but so excited for what is to come these next few months.

Our family back home are having our Family Reunion.  This is the first one we have missed in over 35 years.  We are missing the grandbabies, but knowing we will see them soon when they visit in July is making it bearable.

Sunset watching time….we could see Mount Washington to the west, which is 26 miles away!
Sunset with Mount Washington in the distance....26 miles away

Michael and Cyndy gave us a gift, a book: The Lighthouse Keeper's Wife, by Connie Scovill Small.  Such a sweet gift, can't wait to read it!

A beautiful ending to a beautiful day.
